English Grammar: The Past Perfect Tense

The Past Perfect Tense
โครงสร้าง :    S + had + V3
	I , He , She, Jim		had	gone out before John came.
	You , We , They,			finished reading when Bill came in.
	Tom and Mary			left when Helen reached home.
หลักการใช้
1. ใช้กับเหตุการณ์ 2 เหตุการณ์ที่เกิดขึ้นและสิ้นสุดลงแล้วในอดีต เหตุการณ์หนึ่งเกิดขึ้นก่อนอีกเหตุการณ์หนึ่ง
เหตุการณ์ที่เกิดขึ้นก่อน ใช้ Past Perfect
เหตุการณ์ที่เกิดขึ้นหลัง ใช้ Past Simple
และมักจะเชื่อมด้วยคำว่า when , before , after , until , as soon as , เช่น
- He had written to her four times when he got her reply.
(ใช้ past perfect เพื่อแสดงให้เห็นว่าเขาเขียนถึงเธอ 4 ครั้ง ก่อนที่เขาได้รับคำตอบจากเธอ)
2. ใช้กับคำว่า by the time
By the time + Past simple , Past Perfect
- By the time the sun set , we had left school.
- By the time the children went to bed , they had already finished their homework.
3. ใช้หลังคำว่า that ในประโยค Indirect Speech ซึ่งเปลี่ยนมาจากประโยค Direct Speech เช่น
- He told me that they had left about an hour before.
- They said that they had done the report.
4. ใช้กับ no sooner ................than... (ทันทีที่..........ก็....)
Hardly ....................when ....(ทันทีที่..........ก็....)
Scarcely ............when .......(ทันทีที่..........ก็....)
	Subject	had	no sooner		V3	than	Subject	Past Simple
			hardly			when
			scarcely			when
- They had no sooner finished their work than they went out.
- They had scarcely left the house when the letter came.
